PEOPLE. Hacienda Masini is committed to the continued resilience of Puerto Rico’s highland culture, through fair and beneficial relationships with people and workers, conservation of traditional highland practices, and continued support of collective community agency.
LAND. Practicing its ethos of land stewardship, over 95% of Hacienda Masini is in conservation, sustaining and connecting critical ecosystems of Puerto Rico’s Cordillera Central, contributing to applied research on resilient coffee production, agro-forestry, and soil conservation, and maintaining critical ecosystem services for downstream communities.

COFFEE : HARMONIC EXCELLENCE of LAND & PEOPLE.
HARMONY. Hacienda Masini has utilized agro-ecological practices and principles for generations. Many of the Spanish Oaks, Pines, Capá, Guaraguao, and Guava were planted for soil and shade conservation; buffers and quebrada left forested guard forest and farm. The ~5% of the farm used for cultivation utilizes wind and water breaks, soil conservation tactics, endemic interplanting, best management practices for pests, and protection of waterways and habitat corridors through and around cultivated land.
LAND & PEOPLE. Agriculture and nature, recreation and education co-exist at Hacienda Masini, in the architecture and infrastructure, in the land uses and histories, and in the current practices of agro-ecology and conservation-oriented practices, fair, federally-mandated wages, training and advancement opportunities, and a spirit of camaraderie tucked into a mountain jewel, habitat, mature canopy, water and soil conservation, with complementary activities including trekking, birding, rustic camping, and more.
VISIT: STAY, HOST EVENTS, RESEARCH, & VOLUNTEER
STAY. Hacienda Masini hosts a variety of opportunities for immersing yourself, family, or group into a surreal landscape for a day, a week, a month or more. The facilities are available for AirBNB and VRBO rentals, leave-no-trace camping, and fellows and volunteer housing.
EVENTS. The farm hosts events including weddings and retreats on its vast grounds, far from lights, sounds, and cares in the world. The farmhouse is over 150 years old and is a living treasure of time-honored carpentry, and deeply embedded practices between land, people, and culture.
RESEARCH. Study scaraph joints, hurricane effects, and coffee systems all in the same landscape.
